A step-by-step guide to using ChapterChat’s revolutionary bookshelf scanning feature.
Step 1
Download ChapterChat from the app store and open the app.
Step 2
Click the camera button in the top right corner of the screen.
Step 3
Take or upload a photo.
If you’re taking a photo, I recommend framing it as shown in the examples – try to make sure only full spines/books are showing. For example, if the books on the shelf below are partially showing, the app will try to find matches for those too, and you’ll end up with a bunch of uncertain matches.
Framing best practices
- Make sure that all the titles showing are complete
- Don’t take the picture from too far away – the scanner works well, but it needs to be able to “read” each title in order to properly catalog
- A good rule of thumb to determine if you’re taking the picture from too far away is if you don’t think your grandma would be able to read each title from that distance, it’s probably too far
- If you’re uploading photos of your shelves, I recommend cropping them shelf by shelf to make it easier for the system to identify each book
Step 4
When you’re happy with your picture, go ahead and upload it! Then wait for the scanner to process the picture
Step 5
Once you get your results list, you’ll see that the list is categorized based on the level of certainty that the match is correct. Go to the uncertain category to check if the matches are correct. If it’s correct, click the green check mark to add it to the main list. If it’s incorrect, click the arrows to swap it out with the correct title. If there are more matches than there are books on your shelf or you just want to delete it, click the red ‘X’.
Step 6
Save as a new list or save to an existing list.
Happy scanning!
